What is Progesterone?

The hormone Progesterone is a steroid hormone made by the corpus luteum with the ovary at ovulation, and in more compact amounts by the adrenals. Progesterone is manufactured in the body from the steroid hormone pregnenolone, and is a forerunners to most of the additional steroid hormones, such as cortisol, androstenedione, the estrogens and androgenic hormone or testosterone.

In a normally riding a bike female, the corpus luteum produces 20 to 30 mg regarding progesterone daily during the luteal period of the menstrual cycle.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say studying electrical currents in sperm cells may offer hope to infertile couples but also may lead to an effective male birth control pill.
University of California, San Francisco, biologists Yuriy Kirichok and Polina Lishko have uncovered how progesterone -- a hormone involved in menstruation and embryo development -- switches on a sperm's internal electricity.

JJ hospital to study contraceptive for new momsMUMBAI: JJ Hospital in Byculla is among the 20 centres in the country where the much-awaited research on progesterone vaginal ring (PVR), a form of contraception mainly for breast-feeding women, kicked off this week. 
The study, initiated by the Indian Council of Medical Research ( ICMR), is aimed at assessing the acceptability and efficacy of this hormonal contraception among Indian women. The ring, which is made of soft and flexible material, is to be placed in the vagina for continuous use and replaced every three months.
